Young Pianist of the North 2013
(1st  Prize) 

Elizaveta Klyuchereva (14), Russia
A winner of 14 piano competitions, including four Gran prix. A scholar of Yamaha. In 2013 twice performed in the legendary Great Hall of the State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow. Studies with Nataliya Bogdanova at the Central Music School at the conservatoire.

1st Prize

Ellen Lee (15), Taiwan
Between 2007 and 2012 the winner of many national and regional competitions in Taiwan. Performed with a symphony orchestra in 2012. Played several solo recitals. Since autumn 2013 studies with Prof. Bernd Goetzke at Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.

2nd Prize

Ugne  Vazgileviciute (17), LithuaniaInternational competitions: a winner in Chopin in Nauja Vilnia, 2009;  EMCY Tallinn, 2009; Magin competition in Paris, 2012. Finalist in EPTA competition, Belgium, 2008; Ohrid Pearls, Macedonia, 2012. Special award in Riga competition, 2012. Performed with the Estonian symphony orchestra in Tallinn in 2009. Studies with ass. Prof. Albina Šikšniute at the Čiurlionis School of Arts, Vilnius.

2nd Prize

Robert Bily (16), Czech RepublicA winner of the Robert Schumann competition in Zwickau in 2008, 2010 und 2012, of national competitions in 2009, 2012, 2013. 1st prizes: the national piano competition of the Jütting Foundation, 2011; international competitions Virtuosi per musica di pianoforte, 2012, Piano Talents in Milano. Nine awards at the international Münchner Klavierpodium in 2013. Performed with the Halle State Orchestra in 2013. Studies in Germany with Dirk Fischbeck at the Latina August Hermann Francke High School Music Branch in Halle and with Gerald Fauth in Leipzig.

3rd Prize

Narmin Najafli (17), Azerbaijan
Finalist of the XII Ettlingen (Germany) International Competition, 2010. 1st prizes in international competitions:  Chopin Piano Competition, Estonia, 2012; YPN 2012 (cat.B); Chopin competition, Szafarnia, Poland, 2013. Performed in Paris, Washington, Strasbourg, Brussels, Moscow, Florence. The first of many performances with symphony orchestras at the age of eight. In 2007 included in the “Golden Book of Young Talents of Azerbaijan”.  Studies with Adelya Rahimova at the Specialist Bulbul Music school in Baku.

3rd Prize

Maria Matveeva ((14), Russia
1st and 2nd prizes in nine international competitions in 2008 - 2012 in Czech Republic, Lithuania, Russia, Italy, UK, Latvia, France. Performed with the orchestra in the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow State Conservatory. Scholarships: Vladimir Spivakov Foundation, the city of Moscow (2011, 2012). Studies with Tatiana Shklovskaya at the Gnesin School in Moscow.

1st Prize

Lauren Zhang (11), USA
A winner of many local and regional festivals. The winner of the EPTA-UK competition (12 years and under) in 2013. Has recently been awarded the ABRSM Diploma with Distinction in piano performance and has passed with distinction a grade 8 examination in violin performance. Studies piano with Dr Robert Markham at the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire.

The North East Pianist of the Year Award

Chloe Jiang (7), Washington
Chloe began piano lessons in August 2013 and by November reached the grade 3-4 level. She would love to become a concert pianist. Playing in the competition was her first ever public performance. Studies piano with Marika Slater.

2nd Prize

Liana Storey (11), UK
The 4th prize and the youngest finalist in the Moray competition in 2013 (16 and under). The 1st prize winner (shared) in YPN 2012 (cat. A). A multiple prize winner, including the Best Primary Age Performer, in Glasgow Music Festival in 2012. Studies with Marika Slater at the Glasgow Junior Conservatoire.

Kawai Prize

Leia Zhu (7), Gateshead
1st prize winner of the Tynedale Festival in 2012 in her age group; 1st prize winner in the Euterpe International Music Competition in Italy, 2012. As a violinist, had a solo debut at the age of four in Newcastle City Hall; toured in the UK with the English Philharmonic Ensemble and in Spain with the a chamber orchestra from Los Angeles. Studies piano with Marika Slater.

3rd Prize

Moritz Wagner (11), UK
Gained Distinction in gr.8 piano at the age of nine. Has given many performances in and around Leicester, where he lives, and at the Junior department of the Royal College of Music, where he studies with Thalia Myers.

Invitation to take part in the Brin d’herbe piano competition
(Orléans, France) in 2015


As part of our exchange project, four YPN 2013 contestants have been invited to take part in the Brin d’herbe piano competition for young pianists (www.oci-piano.com). Francoise Thinat, a member of the YPN 2013 jury and the artistic director of the competition in Orléans, has chosen, and offered scholarships to the following pianists:

Felix Kirkby, Liana Storey and Lauren Zhang (all cat. A) and Robert Bily (cat.B).
